The Road Forward — Booklet Design

About this Project

In this university assignment, I was tasked with creating a booklet design with a unique, thought-out layout that contains original content and imagery. I spread the content out in a systematic way to maintain interest and even pacing throughout the pages of the book. I also developed a typographic system that compliments the content in order to reinforce the theme of the work.

Design Development - Thumbnails

Before doing any major work on this project, I quickly thumbnailed several spread layouts. I broke down my thumbnail ideas into four categories: key moments, text spreads, image spreads, and 50/50 spreads. I did this with the intent of distributing these different spread designs throughout the booklet to create a pacing that maintained viewer interest. These thumbnails went on to help me develop a flat plan.

Design Development - Flat Plan

After creating a variety of thumbnails, I further developed those designs into a flat plan which covered every spread in the booklet. This flat plan was designed to prioritize pacing over content, so while some layouts would look the same in the final design, others changed over time to adapt to the booklet’s content. The final product would be based directly on this flat plan.
