Blasterpiece Re-release — Album Cover Design

About this Project

In this university assignment, I was tasked with designing a hypothetical 10-year anniversary re-release of an album. This project came with some requirements: I would have to create two completely different album designs, each consisting of a front and back cover which could only contain duotone imagery. Additionally and obviously, the album artwork would have to be reflective of the contents of the album.

Programs Used

Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate

Design Development - Grids

Before beginning any work relating to the album’s illustrations, I started by developing several grid layouts. In these various grids, I attempted to create visual interest in different ways while not losing emphasis on the most important parts of the cover. This was an important first step since the imagery I created would heavily rely on these layouts.

Design Development - Illustrations

After choosing which grid I was going to apply to my final design, I digitally painted the album. Since the final designs had to be duotone, I was able to create these images in black and white for the sake of simplicity. I later edited these pieces in Photoshop to better align them with their respective grids and to apply gradient maps to them to change the bland black and white coloring to something that better fits the theme of the album.
